Theatre Review: The Comeuppance, The Almeida Theatre

⭑⭑⭑

Acclaimed U.S. playwright, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins wrote a play about a High school reunion, only to leave it in a drawer unfinished, feeling uninspired and frustrated he couldn’t make it work. Fast forward a decade and the same play has had a successful tour on Broadway and is now enjoying a run at the prestigious Almeida theatre in London. The play centers around a 20 year high school reunion, where a bunch of self-proclaimed ‘misfits’, now 40 something year-olds who trust they have long since moved on from their High school days soon discover they are haunted by many of the issues which faced them during their teenage years. U.S. Director Eric Ting directs a UK cast of Yolanda Kettle, Ferdinand Kingsley, Tamara Lawrance, Katie Leung and Anthony Welsh.

Theatre Review: Instructions for a Teenage Armageddon, Garrick Theatre

⭑⭑⭑

Rosie Day's Instructions for a teenage Armageddon delves into the raw realities of teenage struggles. ICW: Anoushka Lucas - The Crucible. Actor, Writer, Musician.

B sat down with actor, writer, musician, all round lovely human being, Anoushka Lucas ahead of her run as Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible, now playing at The Crucible in Sheffield.

We chatted about her role in the show, the roles for women on stage, navigating complex themes of old texts from a contemporary perspective, the advice she’d give aspiring artists, and of course why you should head to Sheffield and see what they’ve been putting on!

Watch (or read the subtitles if you prefer) the full chat above. We enjoyed it, and we hope you do too!

We need to talk about BBC “impartiality”

Impartiality. Defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as not supporting one person or group more than another ; synonym neutral, unbiased. Now, I could get into the discussion about how impartiality when it comes to matters of politics is an oxymoron, because when one group is actively oppressing and denying people basic human rights, saying nothing enables it to continue and therefore puts you on the side of the oppressor. I could do that, but I just wrote a piece about how everything is political, so I won’t repeat myself. And also, it’s not needed. I don’t need to dig deep to explain the issue, because if that’s the definition the BBC are working from, they seem to have a real interesting interpretation of what that means.

Harry: The Interview. A response.

I want to talk about Prince Harry. I know, not very unique, the whole internet seems to want to talk about Prince Harry. I want to talk about why I believe him, why the reaction by the public and the press to his interview disturbs me, and why I think the reaction may matter more, and tell us more, than we may think.

Where The Crawdads Sing author Delia Owens has a racist past that includes murder.

Brutality, infantilisation, racist condescension and stereotype, and a family wanted in relation to a murder broadcast to a nation - Delia Owens racist past that shapes the way her debut novel - now a film - portrays Black people.

Campaigns and Exhibitions

This weekend saw Brianna O’Reilly, the founder of The Black Project, partnering with sisters and founders of The Black Fund Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Sairah Pinnock, to launch their mental health campaign #BeyondTheSmile. With this campaign they ask you to share what’s beyond your smiles, but also serves as a reminder to each of us to look beyond the smiles presented to us.

The Black Project x The Black Fund partnered to bring you a Pride exhibition that took the concept of the seven deadly sins, inverted and reclaimed it through art.
