Meet Stephen Mader, former good officer.
Updated: Sep 14
Stephen Mader, an officer who tried to do the right thing and was punished for it.
Why are there so few “good police officers”? Perhaps because in a system with a shoot first, ask questions if they’re alive after attitude, going against this dangerous grain gets you fired.
RJ Williams’ sister reached out to Stephen to thank him for trying, to which he said he “wished that he could have had a few more seconds, that he wished it would have turned out different, that your brother would still be alive.”
It’s no justice system if deescalating a situation is seen as making no choice. The message here is “the choice is shoot or be punished” - the American police system is broken, and perhaps that has never been clearer than in this case.
